I want to get a list of all companies that are dual listed on the
Canadian Stock Exchanges (TSE and TSX) and the German Stock Exchange
(Frankfurt). If possible, I would like to know the dates that they
became dual listed.

I would also like the company stock symbols as well in Canada.

Dear geoffreysteven,

After crawling and parsing the listings of the Toronto and Frankfurt
stock exchanges, I have determined that the following companies are
listed on both. For each listing, I have included the stock symbol
before the name.

Lafarge

Toronto: LAF LAFARGE NORTH AMERICA INC
LCI.PR.E LAFARGE CANADA INC EXCH PFD

    Frankfurt: CIL LAFARGE

Newmont Mining

Toronto: NMC NEWMONT MNG CORP CDALTD EXC SH

Frankfurt: NMM NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION -REG SHARES

Nortel Networks

Toronto: NT NORTEL NETWORKS INC (TSE)
NTL.PR.F NORTEL NETWORKS LTD PFD SER 5
NTL.PR.G NORTEL NETWORKS LTD PFD SER 7

    Frankfurt: NNT NORTEL NETWORKS CORP

Shell

Toronto: SHC SHELL CDA LTD COM

Frankfurt: R6C ROYAL DUTCH SHELL A SHARES

Sony

Toronto: SNE SONY CORP COM ADS

    Frankfurt: SNE SONY CORPORATION

Vivendi

Toronto: VUE VIVENDI UNIVL EXCHCO EXCH SHS

    Frankfurt: VVU VIVENDI UNIVERSAL

Uniphase

Toronto: JDU JDS UNIPHASE CANADA LTD

    Frankfurt: UNS JDS UNIPHASE CORP

I am confident that these results are exhaustive. Below, for your
reference, are the complete listings for each stock exchange.

Excellent, that covers off the TSE. However, I think you missed the
symbols of the TSX - the junior vresion of the TSE where stocks
usually trade for under $2. Can you run your parser the TSX as well
please? Thanks - Geoff

I thought I had covered both. Do you know of any TSX listings I missed?

I think that there is one that was missed. THe symbol is ENG, Energulf
Resources. Another one that might be missed in the symbol NOR on the
TSX. But the one I would like to catch in ENG, is it not on the
Frankfurt exchange, and if so, why did it not show up in the parse?

Thanks - Geoff

My parser used stock listings from interactivebrokers.com, so it
appears that their data is incomplete or out of date. You're quite
right that Energulf is listed at Frankfurt. I wasn't able to find the
North Group on the German stock exchange's website, however. Where did
you find that listing? If you can point me to the data source, I may
be able to feed it into my parser to see what else comes up.

Another problem is that the Toronto Stock Exchange has renamed its
markets. The senior and junior markets are no longer called TSE and
TSX, but TSX and TSX Venture. ENG and NOR are listed on the junior
market, TSX Venture. I find that the Toronto Stock Exchange's website
does have the full and current listings for both markets, so it's only
a matter of scraping and cleaning the data. I'd like to do that for
you, but I also need an authoritative source for Frankfurt. The
Deutsche Börse website is not much help, I'm afraid.

I've finally located the official Frankfurt data. The full list of
securities tradable on the Frankfurt floor can be downloaded from this
page.

Deutsche Börse: Frankfurt Floor Trading
http://deutsche-boerse.com/dbag/dispatch/en/kir/gdb_navigation/private_investors/20_Equities/25_Frankfurt_Stock_Exchange/10_Frankfurt_Floor_Trading

Energulf is not on that list. However, they say that "most orders are
no longer traded on the floor but through the electronic trading
platform Xetra®".

Deutsche Börse: Overview of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange Market Places
http://deutsche-boerse.com/dbag/dispatch/en/kir/gdb_navigation/private_investors/20_Equities/25_Frankfurt_Stock_Exchange/05_Overview

The complete list of Xetra securities is at the following address, and
it's huge. There are over ten thousand listings.

Deutsche Börse: Complete list of all securities tradable on Xetra
http://deutsche-boerse.com/dbag/dispatch/en/notescontent/gdb_navigation/private_investors/20_Equities/25_Frankfurt_Stock_Exchange/20_Xetra/INTEGRATE/infoxetra?doc=instrument

Xetra does include Energulf, but not the North Group.

I suppose the best I can do for you is to scrape the TSX and TSX
Venture listings from the TSX website, then process the Xetra
listings, and feed everything into my parser to see what comes out.
It's going to take some time, though, since I have to write new code
for the new data formats. I also have to supervise the listing
comparison, which isn't fully automatic due to the non-standard way in
which companies are named on each exchange. My parser produces a
shortlist of candidates that I further narrow down by individual
inspection. Because Xetra is enormous, even the shortlist may be
fairly long. All of this is my problem, not yours, but I'm just
explaining why it may take a few days to get you these results.

BTW, the second symbol is NOM, not NOR. Its for Norsemont Energy. I
just heard it was trading on Frankfurt, but I don't have a concise
list of Frankfurt stocks. Please let me know what you find. I would
be happy to increase our budget to take into account the extra work,
just let me know how much. - Geoff

Visit the (German) site

http://laender.onvista.de/stocks.html?ID_COUNTRY=CA

This should do part of the trick. It lists nearly 1000 Canadian
shares. Listed exchanges are not only in Germany. If you do not speak
German you may try a machine translation with babelfish.altavista.com
but in this case this may lead to confusion.

Note that you see an alphabetic listing of shares. The stock exchange
in the list is usually the most liquid or the one with the last trade.
E.g. if you find NMS for Ballard Power, there will still be German
exchanges, too.(try http://aktien.onvista.de/kurse.html?ID_OSI=89034).

On the site...

WKN: The "Wertpapierkennnummer", the German stock symbol. To get the
ISIN you can click on the WKN. Unfortunatelly the Canadian Symbol
seems not to be listed.

Börse: The stock exchange. Frankfurt is FRA. Note that many non-German
companies are listed at places like Berlin (BER) or other exchanges.
To find all exchanges listed on onvista.de you must first click the
WKN, then look in the top left for "Alle Börsen" and click there. The
result looks like above with Ballard.

To get American (ex USA) shares listed in Frankfurt you can try

http://deutsche-boerse.com/dbag/dispatch/de/isg/gdb_navigation/listing/18_Search_Equities?module=M_ProfiSearch&wptyp=Equi&lang=de&mcp=null&mcpKey=M_ProfiSearch&frmIndex=&frmRegion=AMERICAWOUSA&frmSegment=&frmSector=&frmMarket=FRA&sortfield=09563&go.x=10&go.y=5

To reproduce this huge link try...
1. http://deutsche-boerse.com/ This is the site of Frankfurt stock exchange.
2. Look on the right side, scroll a bit down and select in the
combobox at "Kurssuche" the "Aktien" (Kurssuche = search quotes,
Aktien = shares). A new page will be displayed.
3. Select at Region "Amerika (ohne USA)" (america without USA) and at
Börsenplatz "Frankfurt". (You may also select Xetra, the electronic
plattform that made most human traders in Germany redundant, or both
("Alle" = all))
4. Click "Go", wait a few seconds and you should the the list with
nearly 500 shares in portions of about 25 shares per page.

You cannot see the country on this listing, but the ISIN. An Isin
starting with CA indicates a Canadian share, but most of the shares
are Canadian anyway.

After selecting a share you find several data for it. WKN and ISIN you
know already, "Kürzel" (abbreviation) may be the Canadian symbol, but
I am not sure about this.

Click "Stammdaten" (master data) to get more information inculding
"Xetra Handelsparameter" (Xetra trade parameters, most of the names
are in English there). It also includes the first trading day. - While
I tried the server had some trouble and displayed sometimes an error
message.

This means of course a lot of manual work to do for you if you want to
extract a list. Although this does not answer your question completely
I hope this helps at least a bit.

If you need to translate a single word from German to English you may
try http://dict.leo.org, the biggest English-German dictionary on the
web. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or
trouble with some German pages.
