Hello again Joel,

According to Safeware Insurance Agency in Columbus Ohio, more than
600,000 laptops are stolen or lost every year,

Excerpt:

More than 600,000 laptops are stolen or lost every year, increasing
the risk of loss of personal data and other confidential information,
according to Safeware, The Insurance Agency, Inc., a Columbus,
Oh.-based company that specializes in hardware insurance.

Educational institutions are particularly vulnerable. Universities
account for 28 per cent of the 50 privacy breaches recorded by
California since 2003, more than any other group including financial
institutions, according to the state?s Office of Privacy Protection.?

According to Peder Blohm, president of Laptop Design USA,
approximately 400,000 laptops were stolen in the U.S. last year.

Excerpt:

?Blohm quoted a number that approximately 400,000 laptops were stolen
in the U.S. last year. However, with a company's colours, name and
logo on the laptop, nobody will steal it because nobody is going to
want to carry such an item.

? A laptop computer is an expensive piece of equipment -- and thieves
love them. More than a million laptops are reported lost or stolen

less than 2 percent of them are ever recovered. And while the loss of
this valuable equipment is bad enough, consider the likelihood that

?Recent statistics from the FBI estimate there were 1.5 million laptop
computers stolen in 2004, up 50 percent over the year before. And that
doesn't count all the notebooks or phones left in taxicabs and rental
cars or forgotten in airplane seat-back pockets. Very few of these
notebooks and phones are ever recovered, which has led to the release
of myriad mobile encryption products.

"Anything that is mobile has a higher risk of being lost or stolen.
Often, the data on the laptop is much more valuable than the laptop
itself," says Brad Grob, vice president of marketing for SecureTrieve,
a Los Angeles company that provides security technology for notebooks.
Its product, dubbed SecureTrievePro, offers both encryption and a
backup service that snatches back files you've identified for
retrieval if a thief later uses your notebook to log on to the
internet.?

?The biggest threat to security among mobile devices is theft, with
estimates among industry analysts ranging anywhere from 700,000 to 1
million laptops being stolen each year. More costly than the unit
itself is the value of the data contained in a notebook. According to
the 2003 Annual Computer Crime and Security Survey, the value of the
information in an average notebook is US$250,000.?

?To date, there is little definitive data regarding computer theft,
aside from U.S. insurance company theft-loss figures. For example,
there is no reliable worldwide data available that narrowly and
specifically investigates the chain of events leading up to the theft
and the modus operandi of the theft. The 2003 BSI Computer Theft
Survey, carried out between August 1 and September 6, 2003, is the
first survey to make an extensive investigation of the circumstances,
demographics, security standards, as well as the logistical and fiscal
outcome of computer theft on the individual and organizational user.?

the office.

?You just spent big money on a laptop. You've loaded your important
files on it. Before you take it on the road, remember that laptop
theft is a growing concern.

Hundreds of thousands of laptops are stolen or simply forgotten in
cabs and airports each year. Fortunately, theft is preventable. So
take precautions to avoid becoming a statistic.?

The CREDANT laptop survey was conducted in June 2005 found that:
?the office is the most common place laptops are stolen, making up for
29 percent of all laptop disappearances world-wide. Some respondents
to the survey noted that their stolen office laptops were super-glued
to their desks, physically locked into place and even secured with a
lock and cable. The office finding particularly is disturbing in light
of the fact that 87 percent of respondents report having email on
their stolen laptops, and 67 percent report they had other business
information stored as well. And most disturbing of all, 90 percent
report that their stolen laptop contained sensitive and confidential
corporate data that was not intended for public view.?
