Interesting question...I've never thought to ask about population
distribution by timezone.

Apparently, neither have too many others, although the question has
been answered for the US, in the context of studies of opening and
closing times of voting polls:

Time zone..........Percent
Eastern..............47.0
Central..............32.9
Mountain..............5.4
Pacific..............14.1
Alaska and Hawaii.....0.6

Is that helpful?

Yes, that is helpful for the US. Thanks.
My main reason for asking the question is I am trying to decide what
the default timezone should be for my app and I didn't just want to
use my local one.
Answer
There is no answer at this time.

It shouldn't be too difficult really, just tedious, since most
countries are only in one time zone, and the others like Russia and
Australia are split by interior borders that would allow a search for
populations, ditto for the States, of course.
Maybe there is a website with national populations in a handy list.

Here is a map:

HI,
Two thoughts on the subject:
Probably there is a very great concentration of population in the time
zones of India, with the addition of the Chinese, but does that really
interest you, or will your site interest them?
Universal Time (ex-Greenwich Mean Time) might add sophistication, and
most people know immediately the difference to their own time zone.
(And maybe it is easiest to access ?)

Happy New Year, Myoarin
