I am begining a new job serach and I would like to know how to get
hooked up with the right recruiters or headhunters.  In the past I
have gotten the impression that you don't call them - they call you. 
I have received calls from time to time from different recruiters -
but I have been out of the network for a while and need to get in
front of the right folks.  How do I get their attention?  How do I
find the ones who are placing in my feild (marketing, PR etc).  I am a
senior level placement, so I know the jobs at my salary level are
scarcer and mostly made via placment or word of mouth,
So, to recap - what are the best recruitment agencies for my field (I
am based in the Bay Area), and how do I find the right person within
that agency to take notice of me.  If it's just a resume in the mail
box - that seems rather impersonal. Cold calling?  What works and what
doesn't.   Thanks for info.

Greetings!  I found a few informative articles, one that was titled
"Want to Be Headhunted?" that outline getting the attention of a
headhunter.  In part, that article read,

"Good questions to ask a recruiting firm:

1. How long have you been working in the (XXXX) field?
2. Do you work only on exclusives, or are you sometimes competing with
other firms on an opening?
3. Will you make contact with me prior to having my resume or CV sent
to a client?
4. Do you have any objections to my making contact with two or three
other quality firms like yours?"

It was from a site called Searchmasters - actually, the entire
Searchmasters site may be of help in your job quest.

I also located a book titled "Be Hunted: 12 Secrets to Getting on the
Headhunter's Radar Screen" by Smooch S. Reynolds.  I've included a
purchase link below but if I were you, I'd first check the local
library for the title.  On the Amazon page, there are other headhunter
and executive search books listed.

Another article from CareerAsia stated:

"Disseminate your resume. This is the first step to being "visible."
Headhunting agencies have a talent bank where they keep resumes on
file. "We go through them first before looking for prospects outside,"
Mark says. How long will it take a talent to be noticed? "It may take
a short while. Others may take three to five years. What matters is
that you're available and you're on file."

"Network. Most headhunters get their leads through word of mouth.
Viola explains, "A good network can provide you possible referrals to
headhunters. Your network makes your accomplishments on the job known
to a lot of people."

Another short article from ISP-Planet titled "The Headhunter's
Silence" showed messages from various people:

"Members of the ISP-Jobs list discuss their frustrations with
headhunters. Some in the profession give pointers to jobseekers on how
to distinguish between legitimate job ads and those that are merely
traps."

It might behoove you to join a few message groups of this type as
another way to network.  I found an interesting site titled "Ask the
Headhunter" which seemed to contain a wealth of information on the
topic.  I also located a lengthy PDF document titled "Headhunter" that
had this information:

"While user groups are predominately in the computing arena, a growing
number are in finance, medical and other fields where altruistic
sharing of specialized information is helpful.  You can find user
groups in your area through any of the following directories:

This is great. I esecially appreciate all the links and the list of
agencies.  You are really saving me time.  But - one detail that still
sticks is how do I zero in on the right person at that agency.  One of
the quotes you included talks about getting in the system and how all
important that is.  How does that work?

Greetings again, and I'm delighted you are pleased with all the links
I provided.  To address your specific clarification, I searched the
phrase "finding the right headhunter" and found a few articles on the
subject.  Though they are mostly general articles, I believe they bear
reading.

The best one I found seemed to be "Finding a Headhunter Who Fits," a
Business Weekly article.  Some firms and recruiter names are mentioned
there.  And there was reference in the article to a directory:

"Ask colleagues for recommendations, or visit your local library and
thumb through a copy of the Directory of Executive Recruiters, a
thorough guide of headhunters in North America published annually by
industry research group Kennedy Information."

I then visited the Kennedy Information site and found this synopsis of
the book's contents:

"The famous Directory of Executive Recruiters: Corporate Edition has
been published since 1971. This 2 volume hardcover edition is
specially designed for corporate buyers of search services and search
providers.

"With expert advice on using executive recruiters and full firm
contact information including phone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail and

I'd definitely look for those volumes at the library before making
that investment, though it may be a very wise investment if you can't
locate library copies.

As for specific names, I couldn't locate any actual lists except the
volumes mentioned above but I have a few suggestions.  As I stated in
my first answer, locate some message groups for your field and join
them.  Query the other members for names.  Networking seems to be a
good way of ferreting out information.  Also, you might phone a few
companies and ask if they work with a particular headhunter.  You
might be able to locate names that way as well.

Should you need more clarification, don't hesitate to ask.
