Dear ravsteve,

I assume that you mean the author of the quite well-known quote:
"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that
something else is more important than fear."
I found this by searching for the term "Ambrose Redmon".
However, I was puzzled by the fact that I could not locate more than
three references to this quote in connection with the authors name. A
fourth reference was for the 1850 census record of a farmer in
Richmond, Virginia of this name, but I had the feeling that this can
not be the right Ambros Redmon.

By chance, I encountered the quote in a quotation database, but there
the author's name read "Ambrose Redmoon". A new search for the quote
together with this spelling revealed 686 links, so I think that his
name was indeed "Ambrose Redmoon".

"Ambrose Redmoon" and also "Ambrose Hollingworth Redmon" were
pseudonyms of James Neil Hollingworth, author and rock band manager.
Your main questions about J.N. Hollingworth should be answered by this
resume of an article in the Chicago Tribune of March 29, 2002,:

"Born in Painesville, Ohio as James Neil Hollingworth. Changed name to
Ambrose Hollingworth Redmoon. Was a beatnik, hippie, and former
manager of legendary rock bank Quicksilver Messenger Service. Spent
last 3 decades of life as paraplegic in wheelchair from a car accident
outside San Francisco in 1966. Lived in garage apartment in Santa
Rosa, Cal. until he died at age 63 (1996?). Was a writer, but found no
publishers and was not known beyond a relatively small circle of
mystics and fanciers of neo-paganism. According to his daughter, he
was seriously radical on every level. The quote about courage is taken
from an article entitled "No Peaceful Warriors!" published in the
Fall, 1991 issue of "Gnosis: A Journal of the Western Inner
Traditions"-- a defunct magazine about New Age spirituality."
