I am looking for a Resolution and Adventure Medal from Captain Cooks
second Voyage. They were given to the local natives and have shown up
in dealers shops and in private hands. If you begin by putting
Resolution and Adventure Medal in google search, you will come up as
the first matched sight go there and you will find a photo and
explanition of the medal. This sight had had them in the past though
I am looking to purchase one now and request your search to find one
that is currently offered for sale.

Hi fr8dog-ga

I contacted Mr. Peter Lane (you should know who he is thanks to
madsky101-ga
comment at the bottom). Since he is asking me some question about the
type of medal and your interest in the medal I post his answer as a
clarification request. If you can provide me with the answer to his
questions I can pursue
this road for you. I have contacted many other collectors in the same
way and I am waiting for answers.

Here is Mr. Lane reply
"
Please let me know what country you live in & I will try and find one
for you. Naturally the medal are eagerly sought after by a small group
of numismatists and historians and they seldom come on the market. You
may have to wait up to a year or so for one. Are you interested in a
base metal or silver example?
May I ask you your interest in this medal.
Regards
Peter Lane
Adelaide
South Australia "

Hi again fr8dog-ga

you haven't replied to my first clarification request so maybe you are
out of town but today I got a new response from a dealer house that
gave me hope to find the item you are seeking.
They also ask me some question that I pass to you. If you let me know
the answers I can pursue this road as well.

Here is their reply with the questions:
"
As you know the Resolution and Adventure medal is very rare and
appears on the market only occasionally. We've sold four specimens in
2 years time at auction -- those 4 specimens were from 2 large
collections. We may be able to help you locate one. What price and
quality range were you looking for, and what is your timeframe?

What is your price range for a bronze medal? For silver?

Hello again

I see that you gave up answering the clarification requests, maybe you
gave up searching as well. I see that this question is expiring in a
couple of days and I was wondering if you would consider reposting the
question. I contacted many collectors and only few answers have come
in yet, I expect more in the next few days but your question might
have expired by then ...

Hordern House of Australia (www.hordern.com) has two such medals in
its Oct. 2001 catalogue. I have e-mailed the company to see if they
are still for sale.

Hello "mwalcoff.ga,
Thank you for the info on Hordern, I had found them myself some time
back and both the silver and bronze/copper ones had long gone. I
think that Britten will be where they can be found just have not
figured out how to contact many dealers of historic medals or rare. I
have recently found that an estate "Worden Hall at Faringdon, near
Prestion, Lancashire, England may have or Had one in their collection.
That may have been sold off years back??
Thank you for your help to this point. I will be uping the reward to
encourage more intrest.

I will also offer you this timeless piece of advice: If you have
sufficient resources, everything is for sale. Just becaue the item
isn't listed anywhere as being "for sale" doesn't mean that its owner
wouldn't part with it for the appropriate sum. If you are in this type
of position, then simply locating all existing pieces is a huge step
towards obtaining what you seek.

Hello!

Although I do not have an answer for your request, I did come across
some information that you may find useful.

An article by John Hope, originally published in Cook's Log, page 966,
volume 16, number 4 (1993) makes these statements concerning this
particular medal:

"Whilst there has been some documentation of known specimens published
internationally, as yet there is no up-to-date record of the known
surviving specimens.

A prominent numismatist, Mr Peter Lane, of Adelaide, South Australia,
possesses a superb example of this medal. It is a specimen left at
Bruny Island, Tasmania.

Peter Lane is President of the Numismatic Society of South Australia
and is a Council Member of the Numismatic Association of Australia. He
is now undertaking a study of all known specimens of the medal,
wherever they can be located.

Peter plans to produce a publication which should be of great interest
to many people.

Anybody possessing such a medal, or any relevant information, should
write in or email the Captain Cook Study Unit."

http://freespace.virgin.net/chris.jones/ccsu412.htm

I was unsure if you had this information already. If not, it may be
worth your while to try to contact Mr. Lane. I sent him an email but
never received a response. Maybe you will have better luck contacting
him.

I found his email address when I visited the Numismatic Clubs and
Societies in Australia and New Zealand website:
http://www.noblenumismatics.com.au/clubs.htm

You can contact Mr. Peter Lane by email: peterlane@smartchat.net.au

Good luck and let us know what happens.

Hello

this question as expired but I was wondering if you are still
interested in finding a medal. I may have found an avenue to acquire a
nice quality specimen in brass, EF or so. Please advise whether or not
you have already found an acceptable specimen. Please add a comment
here

Dear fr8dog-ga

here is the reply from my contact that has found the medal for you

"
I'm not sure what the seller is expecting, as the piece is actually in
a mail bid auction. It is a bit nicer than the piece we got $3700 for
last year, so I suspect its real value is in the $4000 range.
Hopefully we can acquire it cheaper!

All the best
"

Let me know if you want to proceed with this since.

fr8dog-ga

things are moving fast, the dealer sent me a picture of the medal, you
can see it at http://www.silviar.com/medal/medal.jpg
If you find the specimen satisfactory and you want to take over with
the dealer from here I can give you his contact information (email,
phone number).
Because this question is expired though you should repost it so that I
can give you the information as the answer.

Please let me know as soon as possible by adding a comment here anyway

Here is the dealer reply:

"
Thanks for your reply. Attached please find images of the medal up for
bid. The auction closes this week, so I'd like to hear back from you
today or tomorrow. We will attempt to buy it at a favorable price
below the one cited of 4000$ (and we will not "max" your bid unless
absolutely necessary), but please let me know the highest price at
which you'd be comfortable acquiring the piece. It is struck in coin
turn and has the usual hole in the edge where the original mount was
once placed. It looks to be a nice quality piece!

Hello again SILVIAES,
I need to know if the Resolution Adventure Medal you may have found is
genuine and is available for purchase! I have requested that you
verify by the party who has the medal sending me photo's and a
complete description of the current auction by post that you say has
been found? If the auction (by Mail - unusual in these days of the
internet!!!) If you are sure that the Resolution Bronze medal is
available I will pay you the finders fee agreeded to by post in three
days. If I am genuine then why would I send off thousands of $'s to
cheet you out of $199.00? Lets move forward with our agreement so you
get your money and I get my Resolution & Adventure Medal carried by
Capt. Cook on his second voyage in 1771.
Cheers,
fr8dog

Hello fr8dog

Let me try to explain what is happening with the medal and you can
tell me how you want to proceed.

I contacted Bowers and Merena Galleries one of America's leading rare
coin dealers (you can find them at http://www.bowersandmerena.com/).
I contacted them long ago looking for a medal for you.
We kept in touch and now they have found one.
As they said, it's in a mail auction and they will try to purchase it
for you for less than 4000$ unless you specify a different maximum.
They sent me a picture of the medal through e-mail but I had to put
the picture on my web site because Google Answers doesn't support
images and that was the only way to make the picture available to you
without having your e-mail address.
I believe that the medal I have found is genuine but I am no expert
and all I can do is trust Bowers and Merena Galleries.
The medal is available for sale through a mail auction and the Bowers
and Mrerena Galleries dealer will bid for you.

Here are the contact information of the dealer
John Kraljevich
JohnK@bowersandmerena.com
tel 800-458-4646

you can tell them that this is about the medal that Silvia was
searching.

I really think that at this point you should take over and talk to the
dealer directly because there might be decision that you will have to
take in a timely manner.
