Just installed Windows XP SP1 update and SP1 update to Internet
Explorer, and also latest update to ZoneAlarm Pro. Now, whenever I
click on hyperlinks, IE dies with an error message:
"Sysfader: iexplore.exe ....at location 0x0...The memory could not be
"read."
I have reinstalled IE6, reinstalled the SP1 update, and am running
ZoneAlarm Pro. I have even tried uninstalling the IE SP1 update (to
the extent that Add Remove Programs in Control Panel no longer lists
IE as uninstallable).
What can I do to stop IE dying with the error message? |

I realize that this might not be a viable solution, which is why I'm
posting it as request for clarification, but have you tried a system
restore at a point prior to your install of SP1?

No, I haven't. That's a possibility, but I don't know enough about it
to be comfortable. I've installed and de-installed various things
since SP1 install, as well as done a backup, so undoing my work
doesn't sound appetizing.
Can't find anything about this problem at Microsoft or on Google.

It's your choice of course, but a system restore would be my
recommendation. I had a problem after my initial install of IE SP1
(not similar to yours, admittedly), where all else failed, required a
system restore, and then a re-install of SP1.
Perhaps another researcher will have more information. Best of luck
in any case!

One other thing to try would be to go into the control panel, and
click on
display->appearance. Then click the 'effects' button. Uncheck the
box that reads 'use the following transition effect for menus and
tooltips.'
This will turn off the fading program that is the likely cause of your
grief. Let me know if this does the trick.

I received a request for clarification, but I don't see any question
to clarify. I believe that I have answered all questions/clarified
all queries. If not, please restate the request for clarification and
I will answer it.

I noticed that nishkaGA suggested the same remedy as sherlockh-ga.
Here is my reply: Yes, thanks for suggesting it. I turned off that
and also anything in
Control Panel-->System that has anything to do with fading or sliding.
Still dies on me.
