Dear Raus,
Regarding your last clarification: ?My question has not been answered.
Please clarify or withdraw your answer.?
I will clarify my answer.
Regarding the UK number of 4 million chess players:
I located other sources stating there are an estimated 4 to 5 million
chess players in the UK
From the Scotsman International:
?According to figures released by the British Chess Federation, five
million Britons now play chess regularly.?

From the United Kingdom Parliament, Hansard House of Commons Daily Debates:
? In this country, 4 million people play chess, and in England alone
50,000 children in some 3,000 clubs play it.?
?The Minister for Sport (Mr. Tony Banks): I congratulate the hon.
Member for Oxford, West and Abingdon (Dr. Harris) on securing this
debate, but he chose a wretchedly inconvenient evening. For me, it
completes a day between the Scylla of dodgy boxing results and the
Charybdis of chess recognition. I have total sympathy with his case,
and that of my hon. Friend the Member for Staffordshire, Moorlands
(Charlotte Atkins).?
?Chess is a sport in which there are no barriers of physical ability
or between the sexes. Both counts commend it to me. I have received
many representations from hon. Members, to some of which the hon.
Gentleman referred. I have publicly expressed my support for chess to
be recognised as a sport, and I gladly reaffirm that. The question of
what is or is not a support is vexed. It is not a matter of semantics,
but a crucial decision. Once recognition is given, sports can receive
funding from the Sports Councils and the lottery and certain tax
advantages, especially in respect of VAT. Regrettably, as he noted,
recognition is not in the gift of the Government.?
?we are the second nation in the world after Russia in terms of chess
success. In this country, 4 million people play chess, and in England
alone 50,000 children in some 3,000 clubs play it. As my hon. Friend
said, we have some spectacular young chess players; she mentioned
11-year-old Jessie Gilbert from Croydon, who became the youngest
winner of an adult world title by winning the women's gold medal at
the world amateur chess championships in January. We are extremely
proud of what Jessie Gilbert has achieved for chess and for this
country.?

An estimated 4 Million people now play chess within the UK
?The Redbus Knockout Tournament has yet again become a date to
remember for all chess enthusiasts. Redbus Investments have announced
that they will be sponsoring the event for the third year running,
held in Southend over the Easter weekend between the 13th ? 16th April
2001. The tournament proves to be more and more popular as an
estimated 4 Million people now play chess within the UK. ?

The benefits of chess in education.
A Collection of Studies and Papers on Chess and Education
?In June 1999 the International Olympic Committee officially
recognized chess as a sport. This is welcome news for the world?s six
million registered chess players as well as countless more
unregistered players. With such recognition hopefully even more of our
children will turn to
chess, striving for sporting dreams that will leave them smarter, and
ultimately able to cope
better in the real world of perpetual problems.?

Chess and the Internet
?It is estimated that 600 million people worldwide know how to play
chess. Of these 600 million approximately 7 million are registered
chess players, covering 159 countries worldwide, making chess one of
the most popular sports around the world. Being this widespread, chess
players were among the first to discover the boundless possibilities
of computers and the Internet. Today, more than 283 million people
play chess with others from all over the globe via the Internet. The
Online World Chess Foundation has the objective of bringing this truly
international community of chess players together in the biggest
online chess event ever: the Online World Chess Event 2002.?
