Question ID: 715917
I want to install a slashdot clone on ubuntu.
I already have a working version 2.2.6 on fedora core 3: www.mashdot.com
I'd like to upgrade to a recent cvs release if possible on ubuntu.
I read and tried to follow the instructions in the INSTALL file that
comes with slashcode and the instructions from
http://installslash.org/install.php which worked with version 2.2.6 on
fedora core 3.
i was not able to build apache with USE_APACI=1 PERL_MARK_WHERE=1
EVERYTHING=1 \ but everything seemed to go ok through the
installation, but the site didn't come up. on fedora core 3 with
latest cvs release, everything was fine until creating slashsite, when
the sql database didn't install properly.
here are the steps i took on my near successful attempts:
http://residentmanual.com/mashdot/slashinstall.txt

I want to use ubuntu because i like the ease of synaptic / apt-get to
install stuff and I need a backup copy of my slashsite running.
I want detailed working instructions starting from a clean ubuntu installation.
Thanks.

The problem, I believe, is that perl was already installed when you
tried to install slash. You CANNOT install slash while perl is
installed. It just won't do it.

I've created an easy set of instructions to help out people just like
yourself: http://www.installslash.org/install.php

Hope this helps (and is the answer!) :)

Thanks
