I recently received a traffic citation with a code 22106 CVC, for
"Unsafe Start". I'd like to know what the average fine is for a
violation like this, and seeing as it might end up costing me a pretty
penny, I can only offer about $5. I'd appreciate as much information
as you could find me.

Hi funkmeister!

Sorry to hear of your traffic trouble. I assume you're in California.
The total fine could be as high as $245.00, or as low as $134.00,
depending on the location, it's higher in highway construction or
maintenance areas.

See for yourself:

TRAFFIC INFRACTION FIXED PENALTY SCHEDULE
http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/reference/documents/05JCBail.pdf

Scroll to page 28/140 (13) .. glance to "22106" $134.00 total.
Scroll to page 83/140 (68) .. glance to "22106" $245.00 total. (hiway maint. etc)

Here's the Vehicle Code that pertains to the violation:

Vehicle Code - Starting Parked Vehicles or Backing
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22106.htm
22106. No person shall start a vehicle stopped, standing, or parked
on a highway, nor shall any person back a vehicle on a highway until
such movement can be made with reasonable safety.

Hope this helps... Sorry the news isn't better..

Search strategy used at Google:
"22106 CVC" then added "penalty schedule"
