How many songs have been recorded and published throughout history to this day?

Since no researcher has jumped in on this one, I asked my brother,
author of "The Green Book of Songs By Subject," and respected record
industry executive.  He says,

"Based on music databases I've seen, my guess is 16 million for the
U.S., and probably another 30 million more for the rest of the world. 
However, the criteria of 'recorded and published' is so murky that
it's impossible to answer, especially in this day when anyone can
record and manufacture music."
