Question ID: 744984
How do Civil War casualties incurred west of the Alleghenies compare
in quantity with those incurred east of those mountains ? I'm looking
for a measure of the stupidity of people who think the Civil War was
fought in the East.

Do you mean those killed just in battle or also those soldiers who
died of disease, starvation, etc?

I'll settle for almost any statistics -- make the answer as detailed
as possible. Include or exclude casualties by any means whatever.

An additional question: Do you mean east of the easternmost point of
the Alleghenies or simply east of any part of the Alleghenies -- as
in, one could drive straight west from that point and hit the
Alleghenies? The mountains curve around some of the battlefields so
the total would be affected by this measure.

If you don't understand what I mean, let me know!

What battles would be affected by this consideration ? List them, and
I'll tell you whether I consider them Eastern or Western.

If my question parameters are too vague, then make the dividing line
between East and West the longitude of Pittsburgh, PA

Request for Question Clarification by keystroke-ga on 10 Jul 2006 19:26 PDT
They would include:

Gettysburg, Kernstown, Winchester, Front Royal, McDowell and Port
Republic are the ones that I have come up with that would be affected
by this.

Clarification of Question by hose7-ga on 10 Jul 2006 20:25 PDT
I'll call all those battles as in the East.

Hi hose7,

This was a fun project.

I've used Pittsburgh as the dividing line. I've found the best
estimates available of Eastern and Western battles and compared the
totals. Casualties refers to those captured, wounded or killed, which
is how most figures from the Civil War are cited. By my count and the
best accepted figures for casualties at each battle, there were
343,143 casualties in the West and 468,473 casualties in the East.

Georgia and Florida in the West???

If you include them in the East (especially GA) I think the numbers
come out quite differently. hose7-ga may have even won his bet!
