Saddam's Fate 'Up To The Iraqis,' Bush Says

"WASHINGTON, Dec. 15, 2003 - The United States will assist Iraqis in
developing a process to bring captured former dictator Saddam Hussein
to justice for his crimes, President Bush told reporters here today.
Saddam will continue to be detained as the U.S. government works with
Iraqi authorities "to develop a way to try him that will stand
international scrutiny," Bush said during a press conference.
The Iraqi people, the president asserted, "need to be very much
involved" with Saddam's fate, since they were the ones who were
brutalized during Saddam's rule. "He murdered them, he gassed them, he
tortured them," Bush pointed out.
Nonetheless, the president maintained that the deposed dictator -- who
was discovered hiding in a hole and captured Dec. 13 by U.S. troops
near Tikrit, Iraq -- deserves a fair trial. Saddam's ultimate fate,
Bush declared, "is going to be up to the Iraqis."..."

Bush promises Saddam fair trial
"The United States will work with the people of Iraq to ensure the
trial of Saddam Hussein stands international scrutiny, President
George W Bush says.
The deposed Iraqi leader will get the justice he denied to millions,
Mr Bush told a news conference in Washington.
Mr Bush said it was for Iraqis to decide whether Saddam Hussein should
face the death penalty.
The ex-leader has reportedly given no direct intelligence to
interrogators since being captured at the weekend.
But US military officials say two key figures have been arrested on
the basis of information "gleaned" from Saddam Hussein's capture.
"The Iraqis need to be involved," Mr Bush said when asked what will
now happen to Saddam Hussein.
"There needs to be a public trial and I'm confident it will be done in
a fair way."
Mr Bush did not say whether Saddam Hussein should eventually face execution.
"This is a brutal dictator...But my personal views are not important
in this matter...It's going to be up to the Iraqis to make those
decisions."..."

However the following day, President Bush gave an interview to ABC
Primetime's Diane Sawyer saying:
"Let's just see what penalty he gets, but I think he ought to receive
the ultimate penalty ... for what he has done to his people," Bush
said. "I mean, he is a torturer, a murderer, they had rape rooms. This
is a disgusting tyrant who deserves justice, the ultimate justice."
