Perhaps I should have asked
Purely out of curiosity what was the highest price ever paid for an
item genuinely sold on eBay?
The auction for the Yacht was not genuine.
I would like Palitoy to post his answer here.
There is no answer at this time.

The answer rainbow-ga gave you may be correct for the highest priced
baseball card but the eBay website gives an alternative answer for the
highest priced item ever sold on their sites:

"The most expensive item sold on eBay to date is a private business
jet for $4.9 million."

The BBC also report this sale here:
"The most expensive item sold on the UK website was Lady Thatcher's
handbag, which went for 103,000. The most expensive item globally was
a Gulfstream Jet, which sold for 3.2m."

Hope this helps,

Kemlo, are you thinking of making a record attempt?

Well, with your money, why not?

I also found this:

"On February 08 2006 eBay closed an auction for a 50% deposit on a
yacht. The deposit sold at the 'buy it now' price of $85,000,000.00,
the total cost being $168,000,000.00 USD.
The yacht is designed by Frank Mulder and built by 4Yacht of Fort
Lauderdale, Florida."
"The yacht was bought by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and is
expected to be delivered in 2007.
This sale far eclipses the old record of the most expensive item sold
on eBay when on August 16, 2001 a Gulfstream II jet was sold to an
African charter airline company for $4,900,000.00 USD."
