Question ID: 778046
I am looking for a list of the main investment and divestment that the
Swedish group Electrolux made in his plants worldwide during the 90s.
I am interested only in the appliance manufacturing plants, not the
ones that produce diamond cutting or gardening tools.
I do not need every single investment in each plant (that would be
great, but I think that?s impossible) , I would like to find
information about: plants obtained trough the acquisition of other
societies, building of new plants, plants closed. With regard to the
plants closed, I would find useful to know where production was moved
to.
Summarizing, the data I would like to obtain are: year, location, what
was produced (in general: washing machines, refrigerators etc), and an
indicator of the size (any among how many workers were there, how many
pieces where produces, the invoice, not necessarily the same for all
plants).
Thank you.

verdemilon-ga,

While the task you asked for is do-able, I'm afraid that covering an
entire decade would involve far more effort than can be justified,
even at the high price you set for your question.

For instance, in reviewing just a single year -- 1990 -- I had to
review over 50 articles, to extract the following snippets of
information:

Electrolux's Brand of European Unity --- Firm Aims to Forge Common
Refrigerator for Continent
20 August 1990
The Wall Street Journal

...Over the past six years, Electrolux has attempted to streamline its
operations by concentrating component purchasing, eliminating
production overlaps, pooling research efforts and centralizing much of
its marketing. However, the company still operates six refrigerator
factories in Europe (it has closed two), sells products under 40 brand
names and produces 120 basic designs with 1,500 variants.

...Electrolux is indeed big and efficient. It has 135 sales companies
and 43 factories in 15 countries. Its corporate headquarters are
located just outside Stockholm, and it has a total 152,900 employees.
It produces about six million refrigerators a year -- half of them in
North America, half in Europe. With some 25% of the European
refrigerator market, it holds twice the share of its nearest
competitor....Traditionally, Electrolux had structured its operations
nation by nation. But after the Zanussi acquisition was completed in
1984, most activities were reorganized into international product
divisions -- "wet" for washing machines, "hot" for stoves and
microwave ovens, "cold" for refrigerators and freezers.

...As Electrolux has rethought its approach to production, it has
closed two of eight factories in Europe. The six that remain include a
small factory in Spain producing about 350,000 units a year, one in
England producing 300,000 a year and one in Finland producing only
160,000 a year

loss-making operations, which weren't identified, as well as certain
real estate assets in the U.S. and Western Europe to finance the
estimated 700 million Swedish kronor ($121.52 million) cost of the
restructuring moves

ELECTROLUX TO SET UP MANUFACTURING PLANT IN MOSCOW
19 July 1990
Agence Europe

...Electrolux will provide its technology to build a plant
manufacturing compressors and refrigerators in Moscow...The contract,

subsidiaries of the group, the Italian company Zanussi and the
Austrian company Verdichter. The plant should be completed by 1992 and
should start operating in late 1992

Pafalafa-ga,

first of all: the kind of information you found is exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you al lot for your remarks about the width of my request, I
apologize, I think I still have to take the measurement of this
service.
The only boundaries I can think of that would not affect the relevance
of the information for me, are time limits. Instead of splitting the
question into two questions, one for years 90-94, the other for 95-99,
I tried to adequate my offer. Now the ?reward/task ratio? is double
than before, I hope that this will do. Shouldn?t it be so, please let
me know.
What else can I say? I hope that if you decide to complete the task, I
will get links to the complete articles. As far as I?m concerned, I
would consider very satisfying also a list of links to articles that
from the title might be relevant, and then doing the screening myself,
probably this might spare you some time.

VerdeMilonga

verdemilon-ga,

Thanks for your note. Your comments indicated that you would like
links to the full articles, but I'm afraid that's not possible.

The articles I referenced are all from commercial databases like
Factiva and Lexis-Nexis. As such, there are no direct links to the
full articles -- they are only accessible if you have subscription
access to the services.

I can't post the articles in full myself, since they are copyrighted.
Best I can do is to post excerpts.

I will see if I can post excerpts (as I did for 1990) to cover the
full decade. I'm sure it will take a few days, at least, so be
patient.

In the mean time, if the absence of links is going to pose problems
for you, please let me know in a follow-up comment.

Thanks,

verdemilon-ga,

You're in luck. A cancelled meeting this evening left me with more
time available than I thought I would have, so here's your list of the
many Electrolux comings and goings in what certainly seems was a tough
decade for the company.

As I mentioned earlier, I can't post the full articles, nor can I post
links to the articles, since these are from subscription databases.

However, I've provided the most relevant excerpts from 1991-1999, just
as I did for the year 1990, above. Bear in mind that some articles
are very brief news items -- only a sentence or two in some cases --
so there isn't much detail to them.

Here's the list:

==========

Electrolux to close cooker factory.
15 November 1991
The Times
...Electrolux, the Swedish white goods manufacturer, is to close its

electric cookers and refrigerators. Another 70 jobs will be created
there.

years.

the changes but said Thailand planned to raise import duties.

growing faster than Europe and North America. It is also considering
setting up a refrigerator plant in Malaysia.

AB ELECTROLUX RESULTS SOAR IN HALF
29 August 1994
HFN
...Johansson did not expect any immediate benefit from the acquisition
of AEG Hausger?te in Germany.

...Electrolux is beginning to integrate AEG Hausger?te into its
holdings, mainly by coordinating administration, logistics and service
in countries where both companies operate. The Swedish group expected
to realize immediate cost savings through joint purchase of materials

AEG's focus on high-end, built-in products for the German market will
have a positive benefit on the rest of Electrolux' white-goods
operations, said Johansson. The president stressed there are no plans
for further shutdowns of AEG's production facilities. Electrolux
closed its tumble-dryer plant in Germany last year and is phasing out
production of full-size dishwashers in Sweden over the next few years.
Both of these products now will be made at AEG's plant in Nuremberg.
The transfer of production of AEG's top-loaded dishwashers to the
Electrolux factory in Revin, France, and of certain tumble-drier
models to the plant in Porcia, Italy, has been finished, Johansson
said. Meanwhile, Electrolux' worldwide expansion includes 60 percent
stake of a joint venture with Barlow Ltd. to produce and sell
household appliances and garden equipment in South Africa. Sales
should be $31.89 million, or 250 million SEK, in its first year of
operation, said Johansson. As reported, Electrolux also has formed a

subsidiary in Argentina.

NIGHT SHIFTS TO END AT ELECTROLUX ZANUSSI PLANT.
12 November 1995
Corriere della Sera

...For the last couple of years a new ritual has been taking place in
the village of Mel (Belluno). Every night at around midnight, some 350
young people have been making their way to work at the Zanussi
refrigerator compressor factory. Each works three night shifts plus
one day at the weekend. The system worked so well in Sweden that
Zanussi's parent, Electrolux, decided to implement it at Mel also,
hoping to turn the village into the "world capital of compressors".

...However, all 1,800 employees have had to take their turn on the
nightshift and not just those people on fixed-term contracts. This has
led to much debate over the past year, and a referendum was therefore
held. Over 50% of the workforce voted against working nights despite
the bonus payment. Consequently, Electrolux will redirect its
investment elsewhere, possibly to another of its compressor plants in
Austria, Spain, the USA or China.

...The contracts of the 350 nightworkers will not be renewed.
