Question ID: 778170
I need a list of about 50 grants for which U.S. artists/crafts
people who work with clay can apply. Each listing should include (at least) the
name of the grant and a Web site URL or email contact information (or
both) where artists could go to get specifics of the grant and/or the
grant application process.

Hello debbies,

What state do you live in?

That would make things simpler as far as finding grants goes.

And even further...

Do you live in/near a specific city which might have grants available
just for that?

Are you a woman? There are many grants that are women-only.

Is there anything else particularly distinguishing about you for which
there might be specific grants available? (for example, some grants
are only for the disabled or for Jewish people.)

Thanks!

I'm looking for grants that would work in a variety of states and/or
cities. Grants specific to women would be good. Grants that would
apply to the broadest range of applicants are best, but (of course)
also probably the least common! Therefore, a variety of different
applicant qualifications (e.g., a couple for the disabled, a couple
for Jewish applicants, Catholic applicants, etc.) would be fine.

Hello debbies,

Thank you for your question.

I've included some grants that are only for woman and some that have
broad requirements such as a "feminist" viewpoint. I found all the
general, national ones I could but I added in some that are regional,
trying to give the best mix of regions I could. (It's great to be an
artist in New York City, Minnesota, or California, as far as grants
go.)

I've included links to some residencies at the end of my answer-- I
wasn't sure if you were interested in a residency, but it's basically
where an organization sponsors you, gives you space and you can go to
another city or country to work on your art. It is a good opportunity
if you're adventurous and there were quite a few that I found. It is
a form of grant if you need a place and time alone to focus on your
art.

YELLOW FOX FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : Yellow Fox Foundation was established in 2001 to provide an
opportunity to assist individuals. Its goal is to offer support to
those who have specifically defined goals in the areas of education,
the arts, sciences or humanities, but who are impeded by lack of
resources. Yellow Fox makes grants for direct needs in the
accomplishment of the goal or project, such things as textbooks, art
or science equipment or supplies, tuition, uniforms and computers. The
grants are for immediate and direct use by the recipients, and are
required to help them meet their goal. Recipients are selected
according to the value and practicality of these projects and their
demonstrated financial need.

FORD FOUNDATION

PROGRAM : Most of the foundation?s grant funds are given to
organizations. Although it also makes grants to individuals, they are
few in number relative to demand and are limited to research, training
and other activities related to its program interests. The foundation
does not award undergraduate scholarships or make grants for purely
personal needs. Support for graduate fellowships is generally provided
through grants to universities and other organizations, which are
responsible for the selection of recipients. Most foundation grants to
individuals are awarded either through publicly announced competitions
or on the basis of nominations from universities and other nonprofit
institutions. In all cases, recipients are selected on the merits of
their proposals and on their potential contribution to advancing the
foundation?s program objectives. For more information see

The Excellence in Craft Award Programs

    * The Society of Arts and Crafts Artist Awards
    * The Medal for Excellence in Craft Award

Both incorporate recognition of craft artists through awards and exhibitions.

The SAC Artist Awards recognizes emerging and mid-career artists
living in New England. The intent and criteria of the SAC Artist
Awards is to encourage and support New England artists who show a
mastery of their craft media and create original and innovative work.
Since its inception in 1994, this has been one of the only New England
sources for grants given directly to craft artists. In addition to the
cash awards, SAC provides an exhibition of the artists' work.

The Medal for Excellence in Craft Award was established in 1913 to
honor recognized master craft artists and others who have made
significant contributions to the American decorative arts field. Since
then, more than 60 artists have received this honor. Honorees receive
a medal in conjunction with a major exhibition of their work, artist
lecture and exhibition publication. After a 40 year hiatus, the Award
was re-instituted in 1990, when ceramist Karen Karnes was selected.
Recent honorees include: Sam Maloof, furniture maker, CA, 1991; John
Prip, metalsmith, MA, 1995; and Jonathan Fairbanks, distinguished
service, MA, 1997; Lino Tagliapietra, glass artist, Italy, 2001.
