At what oasis and area of Morocco is there a new years eve rave/dance
party that is NOT organised by tour groups? I heard about it through a
bunch of hippies that were on their way there last year.

Hello, chickonamission-ga!

I believe you are referring to a yearly New Year's rave party that
has been held in Ouarzazate, Morocco.

"High-tech cyber hippies seek a higher consciousness through massive
dance fests in the wild." 2001
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/lifestyle/technohippies08.shtml

"The Moroccan police officer in the gray uniform says he's sure le
grand festival is going to come off just fine -- never mind the fact
that his small city on the edge of the Sahara Desert is about to be
invaded by thousands of freaks from Allah-knows-where, wielding loud
music, wild ideas and a desire to dance like dervishes for four days
straight.

"They are cyber hippies, trance travelers and techno-bohemians wearing
fuzzy cowboy hats, disco-sparkly shirts, tie-dye and dyed hair. Many
are highly educated and high-tech employed, and they're in a global
pursuit of adventure, freedom and a state of higher consciousness."

"They came to the town of Ouarzazate, Morocco, in a stream of cars,
buses, taxis and airplanes from places such as London, Tokyo, Moscow
and Seattle. They traveled there on the eve of the new year to take
part in the most recent in a string of giant "gatherings" or "trance
festivals."

And so, on a sunny afternoon in a small town on the edge of a vast
desert, Morocco becomes the latest country to meet the Deadheads of
the new millennium.

With that in mind, the gatherings are usually scheduled to coincide
with some natural phenomenon -- a full moon, the summer solstice, the
New Year.

DECEMBER 30, 31 & Jan 1.2000/2001: Akashic Productions presents
MOROCCO 2001 - Ouarzazate, Morocco

"A trance party on a desert island with the ruins of an ancient Kasbah
as the backdrop. The promoters promised to usher in the dawn of the
new millennium with a blending of traditional music and trance. The
Event turned into a poorly managed fiasco and the promoters never
shipped our lasers systems back to us as promised. We lost both of
our touring rigs and has to suspend operations."

Hello fellow travellers.. maybe you can help me. I met a guy last year
at the airport who was off to morocco for new years. He said that
there is a big new years dance party at some oasis in the sahara
desert... We are going to morocco for new years and I NEED TO FIND
THIS OASIS.. DOES ANYBODY KNOW ABOUT IT???

=

hey people, all those people saying they went to this oasis party in
sahara desert, well they were lying as the party wasnt in the dunes or
anything as the majority of people make you believe. Last rave party
in Sahara as they called it was actually on a island near ouarzazate.
I have been passing my new years party in sahara desert for a few
years already, and i try to go south to merzouga dunes and have my
private type drum trance party with tents, dunes, fireplace, some
people lots of smoking, good food ...

=

i was there in 2004
it was called camp desert view
it was on last year, but this year i cannot find any info on it
i'll be in marrakech the 28th, if i get hints on the party i'll go
there for NYE otherwise essaouira

I hope this helps! Have fun!

There are still hippies around?

I was once one of the original hippies and I'd love to know where all
my old sidekicks are these days....must be in Morocco.

This is probably the kind of thing that would be spoiled by being
mentioned on Google Answers.

The real hippies tend to head elsewhere as soon as an event attracts
media attention. For example, Burning Man used to attract quite a few
real, genuine hippies. Now, from what I've heard, many of the
attendees are meth-heads, bikers, and hippie wannabe types who are
really just yuppies in love beads.
