I want to know the optimum time to run solar for my pool. I"m looking
for an answer, with the calculation that got it there rather than a
web page, but any supporting web pages will be useful.
I pay 8c/min per kw up to noon and 31c/min per kw from noon to 6pm.
The best time of the day is somewhere early afternoon when the solar
is going to give the biggest output. I live in Danville, CA, which
94526. You'll need this to figure sun position. I want to calculate by
month as if will change according to the apex and time of year, and
likely direct sun. My 12 solar panels face south. I can get exact
angle possibly by calc that allows for placing angle in later will do.
I have a 1.5hm pump.
I"m sure there's a computerized solar system that will do it for me
based on temperature differential of water going into the solar and
temperature coming out, but i'm doubtful there's one that will take
into account my split rate electricity pricing.
This question is probably best served by someone who has an
understanding of my situation, (maybe similar situation), or by
someone who also would find it interesting to get the anwer to this. |

www.heatsiphon.com does not give me the answer. i've been there but it
relates to cost of heating the pool by gas etc, rather than the cost
of running the pump. To clarify, I use Solar heating, and it's the
electric cost of running the pump that i want to maximize the
efficiency of. thanks!

Hi
I see that you have two interesting questions, which are related
and which it would be a shame to let expire:
Devices to work with my split power bill
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=247811
Calculation for best time to have solar power on to heat pool
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=248025
It is clear to me that you do not want a timer or even a program
which knows sunny days in Danville. Both are open control systems.
You want a closed loop control - system which has sensors hooked to a
computer, and a program (most likely open source, you can modify)
basicaly a HVAC mentioned in my answer to
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=255822
If I am wrong, let's let theese questions to expire.
If you agree, and you want more details and a dialog -
NOT really the actual program,
please give me a go-ahead and I will post more details
of the right' solution,
including links to any such open programs I
may find. Perhaps some pseudocode.
I would need OS of your computer, your programming skils, if any,
and your ability to hook sensors to your machine.
Naturally - you do not need to it yourself. Once you have god design,
you can get someone to hook it up, modify program etc
What i can contibute is the design.

Hedgie, yes please. I've got windows XP. I can have someone write
in most of the commmon languages, or i'd be happy to find out if you
could write it too.
I can get measurements of the temperature. Not sure how I'd get them
to the software. Possibly using IP through the mains power? (I can
control my thermostat over the net right now using IP through the
mains power. Go to www.energyn.com if you want to read about it.)
The software would enable me to adjust temperature differential and
have different differentials according to the time of day. Ideally it
would allow me to enter the kwh cost and decide for itself. Right now
I pay 9cents from 6pm to noon, and 31cents from noon to 6pm. Let me
know if you need more clarification.
Thanks!
