Please provide a list of as many institutions as possible located in
the greater Memphis , Tennessee metropolitan area with programs that
provide an elementary or high school teaching credential (i.e. a
credential program that meets the requirements for teaching in the
state of Tennessee.)

The greater metropolitan area would include Germantown, Collierville,
Cordova (at least).

I am moving back to Memphis, TN after a long hiatus and would like to
go into teaching. I do not currently have a teaching credential, but
am certain I could pass the required subject area tests, I simply lack
the child development/teaching methods training usually required as
part of a credential program. I need a local program, and any
programs that pay while in training would be optimal!

Hello chipmunk100-ga,

I’ve started researching your question and it looks like you are
trying to qualify for an Alternative Type E Teacher License.
http://www.state.tn.us/education/lic_inte.htm

”The Alternative Type E Teacher’s License was developed to offer an
alternative route to teacher licensure for persons choosing to enter
the teaching profession as a second career.” In order to be able to
answer your question about where you might obtsain the requirements
for the Tennessee credentialing program I will need some information
about where you stand with the requirements for the Type E License.

Here are the requirements listed for this license:
1)	Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or
university.

Do you have a BA degree? What major? When did you graduate? What
college or university?

2)	Completion of 24 semester hours of professional education
coursework to advance to a full Tennessee license.

I will have to research further what coursework will meet the
requirements for these 24 hours of professional education classes.

3)	An applicant is eligible for the Alternative E License if it can be
documented that he or she has met the required knowledge and skills in
the specific endorsement area.

Please look at the “three possible routes by which an applicant may
document knowledge and skills to qualify for an Alternative E License”
and let me know where you stand on each.

a)	Completion of an appropriate degree with an academic major in the
desired area of endorsement;

What degree and major have you completed? What is your “desired area
of endorsement”?

OR

b)	Obtaining written verification from the college certification
officer at a university with an approved program in the desired area
of endorsement stating that admission requirements to the program have
been satisfied and that the applicant does not lack content courses in
the desired area of endorsement; ( Click Here1 for a list of
colleges/universities in Tennessee and the programs offered at each.)

I will need to know what are your “desire areas of endorsement” to be
able to investigate further which colleges you might want to apply to
in order to get the “written verification from the college
certification officer.”

OR

c)	Successful completion of the Praxis Exams Specialty Test(s)
required for the desired area of endorsement. (For a complete listing
of specific Praxis Series Exams required in Tennessee, click Here2)

Which Praxis Exams do you think you might be able to pass in order to
qualify via this option?

What level do you plan to teach? “The Alternative E Licenses may be
issued for all initial licensure endorsement areas except for
Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education." It appears that
high school and community college level teaching is possible under the
Alternative E License option. Does this fit with your plans?

Please answer the questions I’ve posed so that I can determine the
possibilities for how you can best pursue teacher credentialing
programs in Tennessee. The answer to your related question may give
you additional relevant information on how to proceed.
