Hello fr8dog,

I have had several queries out regarding your question, and while no
luck so far on the Resolution and Adventure medal, I did turn up two
somewhat related items from separate dealers:

The Royal Society Medal, in commemoration of Captain Cook. Obverse:
Uniformed bust of James Cook. Reverse: Fortune leaning upon a column,
holding a rudder on a globe.

Bronze medal, 43 mm. diameter Royal Society, 1784.

The Royal Society?s formal memorial to the great navigator: one of 577
bronze medals struck. Fellows of the Royal Society were entitled to a
free bronze medal, while silver and gold issues were available by
subscription only; some were reserved for presentation. L. Richard
Smith (The Royal Society Cook Medal, Sydney, 1982) has suggested a
probable final minting figure of 22 gold, 322 silver and 577 bronze
medals. An engraving of the medal was printed on the title-page of the
second and third editions (and some copies of the first) of the
official account of the third voyage.

------

One of the medals is listed as "Very Good" and the other as "Fine".

Let me know if these are of interest.

Hello fr8dog-ga

I will be very happy to help you as I did last time. Some of the
dealers I contacted want to know if you are looking for a bronze or
silver specimen.
Can you please let me know ?
Also please let me know if you have already contacted Bowers and
Merena with your new request.

Thank you

Hi Silviares,
I do appreciate your help. I have the Bronze of the 1784 royal
society medal, would be interested in the silver or gold.

For the Resolution & Adventure medal most interested in the
Bronze/copper in any resonable condition. The silver one might be of
intrest if the price was reasonable. The bronze/copper Resolution &
Adventure most intrested on my part. As before, I will leave question
posted untile you are sucessful in your search for me and will update
it when you find one or more.
Cheers,
fr8dog

Hello fr8dog-ga

I have contacted some of the dealers but like last time none of them
has the medal in stock. I think we will just have to be patient and
wait like last time. I am confident that sooner or later something
will come up. As for Bowers and Merena they are the rare coin dealers
that found the medal for you last time. I plan to contat them again
and I would like to know if you were succesful in purchasing the medal
last time.
I will keep you informad on my findings

Hi Silviares,

Yes last time we were successfull though I likely paid more than
necessary. When we find one this time condition likly to be less than
before and hope for 2800 - 3500. I will keep an eyeout for your
messages as long as this takes. Will deal with expired listing as
before.

I am also in search for a "Wedgwood Portrait Medalion" of Captain
Cook, and Joseph Banks and Dr. Solinder. THese last two were on Cooks
First Voyage 1n 1769. I know the ones of captain Cook were done in
1770's after his death in 1779, Banks and Solinder of that period. I
found a gentilman with the Australian Wedgwood society that saw all
three of them in a 20th century set one of their members purchased in
an antique shop. He nor the owner had any idea when or why they were
put out by Wedgwood other than that it was likly for some 20th century
event.
My offer for these would be $200 also. You want to give these a try?
Thank you,
Fr8dog

Hello fr8dog-ga

I am glad to hear that last time you were succesfull in purchasing the medal.
I will be happy to pursue the Wedgwood search for you as well for as
long as it takes.
One of the dealers I contacted looking for the items you desire
offered me an example of the Cook medal by Lewis Pingo. Probably you
already have this medal but being no expert I have no idea if you
might be interested in this item or not so I pass the offer to you.

Looking forward to hear from you soon

Hello fr8dog-ga and Happy Thanksgiving

just a quick note in regard to the Pingo medal. The dealer I contacted
in the UK says he has "a superb example of the Pingo Cook medal in
silver, the price of which is £850". Let me know if you are interested
or not.

Keep assured that I am actively looking to find the other more
precious items for you.

Dear fr8dog-ga,

I got this reply from one of the dealers I contacted. Now I am a
little confused so maybe you could clarify for me if you want the
porcelain items, the basalt or some Wedgwood later commemorative
version.

Here is the dealer reply:

"Wedgwood decided that Banks and Solander would be good subjects for
portraiture in 1775 and wrote to his associate Bentley in July,

"I wish you would see Mr Flaxman before you leave London and if you
could prevail upon him to furnish Mr Banks and Dr Solander they would
be an acquisition to us."

Wedgwood portraits are not medals in the same sense as the Resolution
and Adventure pieces. At the moment I only have reference to
contemporary issues, in porcelain, although examples of other
portraits are known in basalt. I fear that these subjects may be as
scarce as the Resolutions and Adventures but I will keep my eyes open
for all medals relating to Cook, his voyage and his crew. If the
Wedgwood company made other versions in the twentieth century they
would presumably be far cheaper and readily available. We have always
made it a point of principle to help people with a genuine interest
further their collections so leave it with me for the time being."

Thank you

Hi Silvers,
Yes I would be interested in the SILVER (only) not Bronze, Portrait
Medallion by lewis Pingo dated 1783. If he will take 750 pounds for
his SILVER Medallion.

Clarification of Question by fr8dog-ga on 27 Nov 2003 23:55 PST
Hello again Silviares-ga,

The Wedgwood Portrait medallions are not tied to the Resolution &
Adventure Medal.
The company Wedgwood in Europe produced these Portrait Medallions
(made buy clay then fireed in oven) they were ones made of Captain
Cooks Bust profile and the same for Joseph Banks and Dr. Solender. I
know they were reproduced in the 20th Century because I have two of
Cook reissued in Jasper for the arrival of the New ship "Endeavour" to
England in the 1980's as mine are two of 100. The other set I spoke
of probably was issued for a simular event in 20th century that has
all three men in a set. If you can look at a book "The life of
Captain Cook", by J.C. Beaglehole in 1974 One of the original Jasper
Portrait Medallion is on the frount cover.
Cheers,
Fr8dog.
If that other fellow has the SILVER Pingo Captain Cook I can pay him
with a credit card if you give me his name and phone #. I will sort
you out as you know I am a man of my word.
Cheers,
Fr8dog

Hello again,

I posted a clarification question to you a while back regarding
another Cook medal, and I originally took your non-response as a lack
of interest.

But perhaps you never noticed it (which often happens here, I'm
afraid...), so I'm re-posting it here. Let me know if it's of
interest. Thanks.

Dear fr8dog-ga (if I may)

looks like something is moving also on the Wedgwood front. I got this
reply today from a dealer. Let me know if the price is acceptable and
if I can tell him to start the search.

"
I am a specialist dealer in Antique and rare Wedgwood,I have handled
this set several times.
It was produced by the Wedgwood company in 1974 in an edition of 100
to mark the bi-centenary of the introduction of the jasper body in a
new colour known as Portland Blue.
If you like I can keep an eye out for you for this set,but a price now
would be in the region of A$2,000-,is this acceptable?
Please advise and I will start my search immediately, although I do not
know how long it will take to find one."

Hello Silviares,
You can tell the Wedgwood Dealer that I would like to purchase the set
and hopfully not more than the AU$2,000. Would hope to find for less
but if we find the set we can negotiate. I would like him to keep an
eye out for me.

Later this wee I will post a Question for the Silver Pingo and your
reply will be rewarded. We work well togeather.
Cheers,
fr8dog

Hi fr8dog-ga

I will tell the Wedgwood Dealer what you have decided and hope he can
find one soon for you.

For the Pingo medal I have a reply from the rare medal dealer. I
understand that you want to open another question and that will be
fine but I need to post his reply here because the offer is only good
for 72 hours and you need some time to make your decision. So I will
copy his reply here and if you decide to purchase the medal I will
send him an email to confirm.
I had already posted his reply and his contact information but my
posting was removed by the editors that do not want personal contact
information posted here. However if you check his web site for
references you can also find all the information you need to contact
him.

Here is the reply:

"Dear Silvia

Thank you for your reply to my offer of a silver Cook Pingo medal, and
my apologies for the delay in coming back to you.

In view of the fact that this is a particularly attractive example of
the medal, I would accept a net sum of £810 from your third party and
will hold this offer open for 72 hours. An e-mail within that time
confirming the wish to purchase will place it on reserve. Thereafter,
payment may be made by Sterling draft, or by a personal check in the
local currency. If the latter is an option, I will let you have the
rate quoted by my broker (who is a good deal cheaper than the high
street banks and charges me just £5 for each transaction). The choice
can then be made by the buyer as to which of the two is the easier and
more economical means of settlement. The sum of £810 includes all
shipping charges. I am unable to take credit card payments.

I have been in business for over 30 years and my credentials can be
found on the homepage of my website: www.christophereimer.co.uk

Kind regards

Christopher"

It's fun to search this stuff for you and we work very well together indeed :-)

Hi fr8dog-ga

as you probably know better than I this searches require a lot of
patience, so I have no news so far abouth either of the items.

The reason why I am writing is that
I was pointed to http://www.antiquestradegazette.com/ while looking
for the Wedgwood medallions. So I emailed to them and they sent this
answer. I am not sure that posting on the gazzette (and web site) is
of interest for you but I do not want to leave any road untempted.
So here is the reply from one of the gazette editors

"Many Thanks for your e-mail regarding the commemorative set of
Medallions. Unfortunately I am not sure where it is you can look
however may I suggest that you take an advert in our Wanted to buy
section of the classified. For a price of just £21.15 including Vat
you can run an advert of up to 25 words within the classified pages.
This maybe of some help. We do offer discounts on multiple bookings if
you wanted to advertise for longer.

The Gazette has a readership of 45,000 people in both Britain and
Abroad. We also have a web service that all the classified adverts are
placed onto which in October we had over 13 million hits to the site.
The good thing about advertising in the Gazette is that a large
proportion of our readers are directly involved within the Antiques
Trade."

I do not know the gazette and I don't know if it is worth considering
I just thought of this as a possibility but it's up to you to judge.

I wish you luck in your endeavor:
"Captain Cook's Own Medal
Whilst many medals have been struck to commemorate Captain Cook, his
voyages and his exploits, none are more prized by collectors and
museums than his "Resolution and Adventure" medal.

Struck in 1772 and distributed during the second and third voyages
throughout the islands of the Pacific Ocean, these medals are now
exceedingly rare. The Resolution and the Adventure appear on one side
of the medal, with the head of George III on the other.

2000 were struck in base metal (copper and brass) and just over 100 in
silver. The silver medals did not accompany Cook on his voyages, but
appear to have been distributed in England. Two were struck in 24
carat gold.

Most of the few surviving base metal medals show significant signs of
wear or corrosion, and several are now in the possession of museums.
Very few specimens remain in private hands.

Whilst there has been some documentation of known specimens published
internationally, as yet there is no up-to-date record of the known
surviving specimens."

Hello pafalafa-ga,
I would be interested in the Royal Society Medal ONLY if Silver or
Gold. I believe you have found only two Bronze ones. Isthat correct,
you have located two in Bronze?

Hi Silviares,
Thank you for your message on Gazette. For now I will leave it to
you, and I am sure you will find the Resolution & Adventure Medal once
again. The wedgwood search through the Gazette might be an option
later down the road, I again think you will find me this also. Have a
good Christmas and New Year and success for the new year search.
