Hi Leon,

Here is my research regarding Lee "Scratch" Perry - 79 words

Lee "Scratch" Perry, legendary record producer, singer and songwriter
was born on March 20, 1936 and is considered one of the most
influential people in the development of reggae and dub music in
Jamaica. His first hit single was "Chicken Scratch? in 1965. During
his 35 year career Perry has made thousands of recordings under his
own name and under a variety of aliases. In 2003 Scratch won a Grammy
for Best Reggae Album with the album Jamaican ET.

?There's no one with a history in Jamaican music like Hugh Rainford
Perry, born in 1936. Roughly speaking, there are four major phases of
his career:?

?Perry has made thousands of recordings, both under his own name and,
like many reggae artistes, a variety of aliases. ?

?The amount of work that Scratch has been involved with over a 35 year
career is nothing short of staggering. Scratch's story is more or less
the story of Jamaican music: from humble beginnings, the groove takes
root, grows strong and wide, and contains many branches. From the ska
era to the first wave of reggae and the magnificence of the 1970s,
Scratch was there all the way.?

?One of reggae and dub's undisputed pioneers, Perry helped shape Bob
Marley and The Wailers' early sound. He was also among the first to
use sampling techniques long before samplers were invented.?

?Born Rainford Hugh Perry in 1936, Perry moved from a small Jamaican
village to the big city of Kingston, where he was hired as a runner,
bouncer, talent scout and uncredited songwriter and arranger at
Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's legendary Studio One. Perry earned his
nickname from his first hit single, 1965's "Chicken Scratch," which
was released almost six years after his first record, Old for New
(1959).?

?Lee "Scratch" Perry (born Rainford Hugh Perry March 20, 1936) is one
of the most influential people in the development of reggae and dub
music in Jamaica.?

?Perry began his career in the late 1950s working with Prince Buster
and Clement Coxsone Dodd's sound system. He was soon producing records
with Dodd, and recording at Studio One, but the pair eventually
stopped working together due to personality and financial conficts.
Working with Joe Gibbs at Wirl Records, Perry tried to begin his
recording career but, again, personality and financial problems caused
conflict and Perry left to form his own label, Upsetter, in 1968 (see
1968 in music). His first single was "People Funny Boy", which was an
insult directed at Gibbs and sold very well; the single is notable for
its innovative use of a slow, sluggish, bass-driven beat that would
soon become identifiable as a distinctively "reggae" (or, more
accurately, roots reggae) sound. During the 1970s, Perry released
numerous recordings under a variety of names including Scratch,
Pipecock Jackxon, The Upsetter, Super Ape and Jah Lion. Most of his
hits were big in both Jamaica and the UK, and he soon became known as
much for his eccentric character and outlandish style in his
appearance as for his music.?

?In 2003 Scratch won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album with the album Jamaican ET.?

?Lee "Scratch" Perry the modern day genius and a doctorate of
Jamaica's musicalrecording industry. Music director, recording sound
mixer, producer, creator, innovator, singer, songwriter poet and
humourist. Is there another record producer and singer songwriter who
could muster up a lyrical phrase such as ? Babylon You Cookie Jar a
Crumble; man I can hear you teeth a rumble." from the album Return Of
Pipecock Jacxson. Scratch was christened Rainford Hugh Perry. Rainford
Perry was born in Hanover, Jamaica WI on the 28th March 1936.?

?Jamaica?s most famous producer, recording artist, performance artist
and shaman/trance channeler?s vast and important life has had a more
than a passing impact on not only Reggae but numerous other trends in
popular music, from rap and hip-hop to electronica.?

?Born circa 1936 in the parish of Westmoreland, West Jamaica, Scratch
grew up with music, coming to Kingston in the early sixties, another
"country boy" come to town to look for work. Before long he found
himself working for Clement ?Coxsone? Dodd and his Downbeat sound
system as gofer and runner.?

-------------------------------------------------------------

?Lee Perry's early life mirrors most of Jamaica's musical super stars:
he was born poor in a small village, earned an early reputation as a
tough guy, came to Kingston in the late 1950s, heard the music,
learned the moves, got the groove. His first job was with pioneering
record producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at his soon to be legendary
Studio One: gopher, bouncer, spy, talent scout, uncredited songwriter,
and - eventually - performer. His main job became selecter at
Coxsone's weekly Ska raves, which he turned into a huge success.

(..)

?Perry cut his first record, "Old For New" in the early 60s; "Chicken
Scratch" was his first bonafide hit in 1965, but it was a drop in the
Studio One bucket.?

An interview with Lee "Scratch" Perry by Douglas Heselgrave
Victoria, BC, Canada June 20, 1999:

?Doug: Why do they call you "Scratch"?

LSP: That means this is the earth, so that when you scratch the earth,
you're going to plant a seed, so when you plant a seed, the seed will
grow, but if you don't scratch the earth, the seed won't grow, when
you scratch the earth and the seed grow, that's your tree. You plant a
tree, and you make a blessing and the earth return to you your
blessing.?
