Question ID: 407083
I have an old Pentium 200 laptop (CTX EZBook 700 series, originally
purchased in 1997 I think) that has no USB ports. Also, the expansion
slots (Type II) are the older 16-bit standard, not the 32-bit Cardbus
variety. I would like to connect this laptop to my cell phone (Samsung
A660) using this cable:
http://www.futuredial.com/FDCart/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=707&cid=50

So what I would like to know is if there is any place where I can
purchase a USB expansion card that will work with my 16-bit slots.
This would be ideal as I've seen tons of Cardbus USB cards on eBay but
haven't run across the type I need. It doesn't matter if the card is
USB 1.1 or 2.0, either will be fine.
I realize this may be a tall order for only $10. Basically I am
looking for ANY solution that will allow me to connect the laptop and
phone. I am very flexible with this, I'd also accept an answer that
tells me if there is another cell phone data cable that will connect
my Samsung A660 to a serial port on the laptop. Also I would accept an
answer that tells me if there is any kind of adapter that will convert
a serial port to a USB port without data speed loss (I know of
adapters that convert USB ports to serial, and I've tried using this
in a round-about way using gender-changers and it failed because the
serial port speed isn't sufficient for the USB data transfer).
Finally, if a solution cannot be determined I will also accept any
info that you could provide on why this can't be done.
Thanks for reading all of this, if you can help me out with any
information at all I will be very grateful.

Hi driv-ga,

Can you tell me if you have come across the following product?

Thanks.

Hi Googleexpert,
Thanks for the link, I hadn't seen that one before. The only thing is
that I'm not quite sure if that's a 16-bit card or not, the
description on the site didn't really say much. It says 'Provides
older Notebooks with USB ports' but I know of older IBM Thinkpad
laptops that don't have USB onboard but do have 32-bit cardbus slots.
I do appreciate the reply though, if I can't find a solution on here
in a couple weeks I will ask you to please post that as an answer so
your time will be compensated.
Thanks,
driv

Hi driv-ga,
I tried contacting 6thplanet.com for more information on the PCMCIA card that
they are selling.
Unfortunately, I got back "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender".

Just letting you know that you probably should not order from them because
of the lack of information on that product.

I'll keep you posted if I find any leads.

Hi crythias,
Wow a standalone USB server that I can connect to over the network,
what a cool product. Thanks for posting the link, I had no idea
anything like that existed. I did some looking on the Keyspan site and
it seems as though the current firmware is geared towards printers and
scanners and has no support for USB audio/video devices. This makes me
doubt whether it'll work with my cell phone, I emailed the company and
am waiting for a reply.
Thank you for sharing the info, it was very interesting and much appreciated.

amazon.com has a nice user comment for the product. ASIN: B0001NA3L2

I'd guess PDA sync would be reasonable to expect from the product as well.
