Hi timespacette,

There is always my personal favorite mapping web site:

TerraFly (enable popups for this site)
http://terrafly.com/
Here, you enter an address and you are taken to static satellite
imagery where you can zoom-in. You can literally see the roof of your
house. The closer you zoom-in the more streeet names are revealed.
By clicking on the edge of the photo, you will begin to fly over the
area in any direction. You may stop flying and print at any time in
various sizes and resolutions. You may add layers of information by
clicking "layers" and "advanced."

You can go to http://www.dexonline.com and enter Orcas, WA to get an
address that is actually on Orcas Island, to see an example.

Here's an overview map of Orcas, so if you want, you can be very
specific in describing what coastal area you want the map to cover.

San Juan County - Official Maps?Documents
http://www.co.san-juan.wa.us/planning/Official%20Maps/Official%20Maps%20Documents.html
For some reason Adobe is freezing my computer, so I am unable to loate
the exact map you need, although I'm certain there is one here.

San Juan County Assessor's Real Property Search:
http://www.co.san-juan.wa.us/assessor/rpsrch.asp

And their GIS Data Download Library
http://www.co.san-juan.wa.us/gis/gislib.asp

TopoZone (Scroll to "Place Name Search" and enter "orcas island" or
"san juan islands")
http://www.topozone.com/
Here you can view Shaded Relief Maps, 1-Meter Aerial Photos, and
Detailed Street Maps. You can zoom-in or out, print maps and move
around Orcas for the exact location you want.

Google recently aquired Keyhole:
http://www.keyhole.com/ (You *could* download this for the 7 day trial)
..."Fly from space to your home town. Visit exotic locales such as
Maui, Tokyo, Rome and Paris. Satellite imagery makes it real. Explore
restaurants,
hotels, parks and schools. Think magic carpet ride! ..."

And for fun, just because I found it:

These are not too detailed:

retrieve specific maps.

These are scanned from original drawings in the late 1800's

Here's a San Juan Islands Directory:
http://www.sanjuanislandsdirectory.com/
You can get a random Orcas (business) address to enter at TerraFly here.

Click: U.S. Coast Surveys, Orcas Island Maps:
http://www.darvillsrareprints.com/maphome.htm
The Orcas maps are at the bottom of the resulting page.

If I can assist you further in regards to Maps of the san Juans and
orcas island, please don't hesitate to ask via the "Request For

Hi cynthia!

Boy, some of these look like fun, but I don't want to spend the money
to buy a map . . . and Keyhole looks the most intereting but it only
works for Windows (I'm a Mac). Anyway, I did find a fairly good one
on Topozone, at least it indicated roughly what we were looking for .
. . after the SE Asia tsunami we're having a neighborhood discussion
about what would happen if . . . who would get it and who wouldn't,
etc, etc. Interesting stuff. Thanks!

Hmmmm

You should remember what Shakespeare said about computers ...

Ha!

Never would I switch! Not for Keyhole, not for nothing, no-how, no way!

A regular PC is like a boat; it's best to have a neighbor who has one,
so you can use it once in a while and let them fret over the upkeep.

(did Shakespeare really say that?)

Oh, dear!

What would have happened to civilisation if Noah had decided that it
was best to rely on his neighbour's PC?

He would probably have been unable to navigate the rocky islands of San Juan.

And as Cole Porter said in 'Kiss Me Kate' ...

'Brush up your Shakespeare'.

TS,

Well I'll be .. there you are hanging out your washing. Amazing things
these big cameras are.

I see that the Orcas Island Public Library carpark is empty at
present. I can just make out the scrawled note on the door. They will
be open again tomorrow. Might you have time then to investigate the
library register of 1956?

4 stars only for such a depiction, or is that the maximum rating for
Motels gracing your isle in envy?

Miss Irene,

Thank you for sharing your recent photograph. I will add it to my
collection of vacant carpark images!

1956. OK, I will keep this very simple to avoid a 17th repetition.

Instructions from Sherlock H :

1/ Go to your local library.
2/ Ask the nice librarian if you can view the library's very own 1956 ledger.
3/ Within the ledger you will find reference to the safe's combination.
4/ Carefully read the instructions in the ledger.
5/ Compare the instructions to that which was transcribed elsewhere.
6/ Do the numbers or instructions differ?
7/ If so, you can now open the safe.
8/ If not, we will find another way.
