Hi,

My grand-pa used to make traditional family photo albums and they're a
blast to look at today! Now I'm thinking to continue that tradition by
with modern means, though I'm aware that every method has it
advantages and disadvantages. But one advantage would be that you can
share the pictures with family members that live far away etc.

So I'm looking for a site that offers to host photo albums in an
efficient way. I know there are some out there (like Yahoo! Photos
etc) but they're not good enough.

What I would like that site (optimally) to have:

- easy multiple file upload (or all-in-one-ZIP)
- password protection for individual folders
- the host should have some previous experience and not just be a
total (though well-meaning) amateur since I don't want to start over
again in a year
- the host should have implemented some sort of backup functionality
- some sort of export function would be a plus
- the service of course can cost something
- the album folders should get sorted chronologically, subdivised in
years, months, days
- the pictures in the albums should get sorted chronologically or alphabetically
- you should be able to add comments to individual pictures as well as to folders
- you should be able to upload original sized (or at least printable
sized) photos and the site would automatically generate thumbnails
- you should be able to select templates or incorporate your own CSS design

I know these are lots of features I'm looking for, but if anyone could
indicate me some potential sites, I'd be really grateful!

Thanks :)

Jerome

Hi there,

Thanks for answering and the links provided are somewhat interesting.
Though they're not exactly what I was looking for (perhaps my question
wasn't clear enough). I'm not just looking for a site where I can put
a few pictures to share them and let people print them. I'm rather
looking for a 'real' equivalent to a traditional photo album meant to
archive photographs, display them in a more or less stylish way, be
able add descriptions etc (in fact all the things in enumerated in my
first post).

I'm not really interested in a commercial site whose main interest is
to sell prints of my pics, I'm more hoping for a sort of www.pbase.com
with additional functions (like a timeline etc).

But perhaps a site like this doesn't exist and I would have to build
such a site from scratch.

Do you have anything to add after these clarifications?

Thanks!

I think what you want is Flickr. Easy upload, password protection,
chronological or alphabetical sorting, captioning, timelines, and CSS
templates are all there. Much of this functionality is provided by a
module called Organizr.

Does that suit your needs?

By the way, "Introducting" is not a word. Oops! "Introducing" is what I meant.

Thinktra,

Take another look at smugmug. It incorporates everything you are
looking for and more except maybe the export function (fully
customizable with CSS for power users, unlimited storage, multiple
file uploads, password protection, private galleries, sorting,
comments, original sized photos, templates, visitor comments,
tracking, vanity url, timelines etc.). In my opinion a great service
with great support that's worth the price.

I haven't done much with my galleries, but you can check it out at
jjj.smugmug.com. If you join, use my referrer code JjMfip2GlN1R2 for a
$5.00 savings.

Hi Jerome

Have a look at FOTKI (www.fotki.com). You will like it, and they
offer free service up to 2 MB.

I found it excellent.

Sorry the repetition, but I did not know why the hyperlink was not
active. Now I think that the http:// was missing.
