rroscoe-ga,
I've spent some time fine-tuning the search to provide a high
proportion of good news stories as they appear. It turns out, the
simple approach seems to work the best.
The following two searches on Google News return a large number of the
type of stories you're looking for:
"top doctors OR lawyers OR businessmen OR businesses OR entrepreneurs
OR tennis OR golfers OR schools OR hospitals OR managers OR leaders"
http://news.google.com/news?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2005-04%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=%22top+doctors+OR+lawyers+OR+businessmen+OR+businesses+OR+entrepreneurs+OR+tennis+OR+golfers+OR+schools+OR+hospitals+OR+managers+OR+leaders%22&btnG=Search+News
"top * doctors OR lawyers OR businessmen OR businesses OR
entrepreneurs OR tennis OR golfers OR schools OR hospitals OR managers
OR leaders"
http://news.google.com/news?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2005-04%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=%22top+*+doctors+OR+lawyers+OR+businessmen+OR+businesses+OR+entrepreneurs+OR+tennis+OR+golfers+OR+schools+OR+hospitals+OR+managers+OR+leaders%22&btnG=Search+News
The two searches are very similar, but there is an important
difference. The first searches for articles with the phrase "top
doctors" (or lawyers or businessmen...etc).
The second search includes an asterisk -- essentially a wildard --
that will find phrases that match the pattern "top [anything]
doctors", such as "top regional doctors", "top women doctors", top ten
doctors", and so on.
The two searches below are similarly constructed, except that they use
the word "best" rather than "top".
"best doctors OR lawyers OR businessmen OR businesses OR entrepreneurs
OR tennis OR golfers OR schools OR hospitals OR managers OR leaders"
http://news.google.com/news?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2005-04%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=%22best+doctors+OR+lawyers+OR+businessmen+OR+businesses+OR+entrepreneurs+OR+tennis+OR+golfers+OR+schools+OR+hospitals+OR+managers+OR+leaders%22&btnG=Search+News
"best * doctors OR lawyers OR businessmen OR businesses OR
entrepreneurs OR tennis OR golfers OR schools OR hospitals OR managers
OR leaders"
http://news.google.com/news?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2005-04%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=%22best+*+doctors+OR+lawyers+OR+businessmen+OR+businesses+OR+entrepreneurs+OR+tennis+OR+golfers+OR+schools+OR+hospitals+OR+managers+OR+leaders%22&btnG=Search+News
You can, of course, modify the terms in the searches to suit your
needs, and I encourage you to experiment a bit based on your
experience with these types of stories.
But there are some other modifications that you may want to consider as well.
The searches above return several thousand headlines, and cover
several months worth of news. You can easily narrow the coverage to
just the current week, or day, or hour, by using the advanced search
feature at Google News:
http://news.google.com/advanced_news_search?
For instance, searching on:
"top doctors OR lawyers OR businessmen OR businesses OR entrepreneurs
OR tennis OR golfers OR schools OR hospitals OR managers OR leaders"
http://news.google.com/news?svnum=10&as_scoring=r&ie=UTF-8&q=%22top+doctors+OR+lawyers+OR+businessmen+OR+businesses+OR+entrepreneurs+OR+tennis+OR+golfers+OR+schools+OR+hospitals+OR+managers+OR+leaders%22&as_drrb=q&as_qdr=d
for the past day returns just 17 items, and the first one listed is:

Perhaps the best of all, you can set up automatic "News Alerts" that
will send you an email notification everytime new stories appear that
meet your search criteria:
The instructions are fairly straightforward, and you can set up as
many alerts as you'd like...for instance, one for each of the four
searches above.
Between the targeted searches and the use of the News Alerts, I think
you'll find you have very good access to the 4,500 news sources
covered by Google News, and very quick access to the kind of good news
stories you are seeking.
But -- as always -- if there's anything else you need, just let me
know by posting a Request for Clarification, and I'll be happy to
continue working on this for you.
All the best.
