I've done a G-Search and could only find 3 brief CIA-related entries which tell me very little and may or may not be our man. The man I'm interested in is Donald Beattie Calder who was 34 when he married in London, England in Jan 1946. He could still be alive but I doubt it. His occupation was then given as Third Secretary American Diplomatic Service. C'mon somebody show me how it's done! Many thanks Bryan

Thanks, Bryan. So happens, I recently posted an article to the a GAR-frequented blog, the gist of which was that most of the world's information still sits on library shelves, inaccessible to web surfers: http://web-owls.com/2006/07/30/full-text-book-search-online-and-free/ Full-text book searches Mr. Calder is a case in point. Extensive electronic searching turned up...well, you saw how much it turned up! But an email Ms. Schoo, the librarian and civil servant par excellence at the Department of State, led to a fax of The Donald's highly abbreviated precis (abbreviated as in "v.c, sec. D5 Apr 9, 40") that, with a bit of decoding, led to the timeline of his career at the State Dept. Like I said, wish there was more. If you want to try a follow-up at the library, Ms. Schoo is the Reference Librarian at: Library@state.gov Best of luck, paf

Hi Bryan, It may be difficult to amazed you, and I certainly cannot. I checked the Social Security record of deceased persons and found no one born in 1911 or 1912, two born in 1915. Interesting that little book from the DDR by Madder from 1968. Cheers, Myo |

Kemlo, You don't know how it was back in those days. He knocked her up after the Christmas party, and the ambassador told him that marrying her was the only way to save his career - not to mention her reputation and that of the USA. Hence the January wedding. |

Lordy, you sure know how to pick 'em. This guy's as obscure as they come, without being invisible. Someone by the name Donald B Calder is listed as the Deputy Chief of Mission for the US Embassy in Jordan in 1965. The name pops up in one or two other contexts, in a very minor and unrevealing sort of way (as in the first link from bowler-ga). Fair is fair, though. How did you come across the guy in the first place, and how on earth do you know his middle name? dave |

Bryan, These are references to Donald B Calder in the New York Times archive. Trouble is, payment is requirement to see whether it refers to your man. I'm not sure how reliable the phrase search is in this database. http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/nytimes/results.html?st=advanced&QryTxt=%22donald+b+calder%22&x=0&y=0&By=&Title=&datetype=0&frommonth=09&fromday=01&fromyear=1851&tomonth=12&today=31&toyear=1980&restrict=articles&sortby=REVERSE_CHRON |

Biography Index (Volume 2: August, 1949-August, 1952), as mentioned by pafalafa-ga, is available in one of the local libraries. On Monday or Tuesday I could try to find out more. |

Here in the states, we have something known as a "short stack", a breakfast treat not quite as debilitatingly massive as a tall stack. Here, then, my short stack on Donald Beattie Calder: Born in New York July 24, 1911 Graduated from Columbia University in 1933, subsequently attending University of Grenoble, University of Berlin, University of Chicago, and then back at Columbia between 1933 and 1935. He was a teaching fellow and then an instructor in Economics at the City College of New York from 1937-1940, and also had a stint at the Academy of International Law in The Hague in 1938. Speaks English, German and French. He joined the Diplomatic Service in 1940, served as vice consul in Zurich, attended Foreign Service school in early 1941, then served in London as vice consul beginning June 2, 1941; became 3rd Secretary in December 22, 1941; 2nd Secretary on July 11, 1946. Thereafter, he had a series of posts outside the UK as follows: 8/11/1947 -- Unclear, possibly Washington DC 11/10/1947 -- Brussels 7/16/1951 -- Istanbul 8/2/1954 -- Bonn, as Deputy Commercial Attache, later 1st Secretary Between 1957 and 1960, various positions apparently as a lecturer/teacher within the Foreign Service...geography not clear, but perhaps DC. 1/22/1961 -- Rabat 3/4/1962 -- Amman 10/24/ 1965 -- Manila End of the trail...! Wish there was more, but there ain't. paf |

Wow, katemmh-ga, you have been busy! Very many thanks. I do know that Don's father was another Donald but apparently without a middle name, according to Don's Marriage Certificate (which I don't trust). Donald Senior was described therein as a Company Treasurer (deceased). All the Best Bryan |
