Hello again Curious360,

Information regarding sales of the Blue Planet has been very difficult to locate.

From your clarification, I assume that you also found the Blue Planet Case Study.
http://www.bbcworldwide.com/aboutus/corpinfo/annualreps/review2002/product/salesprint.html

I did find an article published in October 2003 with the following information:

- The total number of videos and DVD?s of The Blue Planet that were
sold up to October 2003. (This is one number, not a breakdown between
DVD?s and videos.)
- The value in Euros of retail sales up to October 2003 from Blue
Planet across all media.

Another article published in July 2003 provides:
- The estimated value of The Blue Planet at retail. This figure is
much lower that the figure taken from the previous article that I
mentioned.

An article from January 2002 states:

- The number of Blue planet books that were sold in December 2001.

- The number of Blue Planet DVD?s that were sold worldwide in December 2001.

Would this information be of your interest?

Thanks,
Bobbie7

Hi Bobbie7,
The articles you've found are indeed of interest to me--great
sleuthing on your part. You haven't located any information pertaining
specifically to the Blue Planet book published by DK post 2001 have
you? or any info on the cd?
Thanks so much for your help.

Hello again Curious360,

From Time Europe: October 5, 2003

- One million videos and DVD?s of The Blue Planet were sold up to October 2003.

- Retail sales up to October 2003 from Blue Planet across all media: ?43 million.

Excerpt:

?That's a big goal, and to help meet it the BBC is exploiting the
commercial opportunities of programs like The Blue Planet. Since it
first aired in 2001, the breathtaking series about the world's oceans
? a coproduction with the Discovery Channel ? has become a franchise.
"Two years before it was delivered, we saw the footage and said,
'We've got a cracker on our hands,'" recalls Alix Tidmarsh, the
director of intellectual property management at BBC Worldwide. Some
500,000 copies of tie-ins have been sold to date, and 1 million videos
and DVDs. A concert of Blue Planet music premiered at the Royal
Festival Hall in 2001 and has since been performed at the Hollywood
Bowl. And a 90-minute feature-film version, Deep Blue, with a score
performed by the Berlin Philharmonic, had its premiere at the San
Sebastián Film Festival in Spain last month. There's also been some
merchandising, mainly of calendars, but the BBC decided against toys.
"There are already lots of little stuffed dolphins on the market,"
Tidmarsh says. Retail sales to date from Blue Planet across all media:
?43 million.?

BBC Press Release: July 2003

?The Blue Planet, one of the best selling factual properties ever and
the inspiration for two major spin-offs - Deep Blue, the theatric
version, and series of concerts, The Blue Planet Live! The Blue Planet
is thought to be worth £30 million at retail.?

BBC Press Release
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/commercial/worldwidestories/pressreleases/2003/07_july/walking_with_brand.shtml

- 63,000 copies of Blue planet books were sold in December 2001.

- 23,000 units of Blue Planet DVD?s that sold worldwide in December 2001.

Excerpt:

?Shoppers also went to town on BBC book titles that include 'The Blue
Planet' (over 63,000 copies sold in December) and 'Walking with
Beasts' (47,000 copies).?

(..)

?The rising popularity of DVD players has fuelled high demand for
quality DVD titles and more than doubled the number of BBC Worldwide
DVDs sold over Christmas and New Year compared with the same period
last year. Worldwide's best-selling title was 'The Blue Planet'
(23,000 units sold in December)

Blue Planet Case Study

?In total, more than 250,000 Blue Planet videos and DVDs were sold
last year. Further plaudits came for our publication The Blue Planet
which was judged Illustrated Book of the Year at the British Book
Awards. In the UK, the book was in the top 10 bestsellers for
non-fiction for 14 weeks and over 300,000 copies were sold
internationally.?
http://www.bbcworldwide.com/aboutus/corpinfo/annualreps/review2002/product/salesprint.html

?More than 12 million people watched The Blue Planet when it was shown
on BBC1 in September 2001 and it has since become a global phenomenon
with sales to more than 50 countries.?

I did further research and also went to the DK publisher?s website,
and unfortunately I could not uncover additional information for the
Blue Planet book published by DK or the CD.

Search criteria:
BBC "Blue Planet" copies sold
"The Blue Planet" million sales books
"The Blue Planet" DVD sales
"The Blue Planet" video sales
"The Blue Planet" success
?DK Publishing? ?The Blue Planet?
"Blue Planet" "* copies"

I hope you find this information useful!
